Entomology

The natural history collections, located on the 2nd floor of the Přerov chateau, are proof of the high level of private collecting in Přerov in the first half of the 20th century. The form of the installation of the exhibits in period showcases and the method of sorting the content into typological series speak faithfully about the level of museology at the time.

The founder of the Entomology exhibition was a native of Přerov, teacher and entomologist Ladislav Hudeček (1872-1941), who in 1927 partly donated and partly sold his lifelong collection to the Municipal Museum. The exhibition presents an excellent cross-section of the most numerous group of invertebrates - insects. The collection gathers 22,433 individuals from more than 9,000 species of insects from around the world, which are housed in a total of 114 glazed entomological boxes. Most, 67 boxes, are dedicated to domestic and exotic butterflies, of which the most tropical are interesting with beautiful colors. All families are represented in the exhibits of beetles. The developmental cycles of butterflies, from the egg to the adult, including the food plant, are valuable. The exhibition is complemented by a bust of L. Hudeček made of burnt clay by sculptor Josef Baják.
